Wild ethno-restaurants monitored to save extinction – A Blue-bearded hummingbird (Oxypogon cyanolaemus)

Overall objective Increase the conservation status of the Blue-bearded hummingbird (Oxypogon cyanolaemus) from critically endangered (CR) to Endangered(EN), through population increase from <250 to > 1000 specimens. Specific objective

  1. Construction of 10 botanical gardens, with drinkers in the form of fluorescent colored flowers, with 20% sugar solution, as a source of food for the target species.
  2. Train 500 young Arahuac indigenous people in bird conservation.
  3. Monitoring of 12 specimens of the hummingbird through satellite telemetry, for the mapping of 8km2 of ecological corridors.
  4. Inform at least 20,000 people about project progress.
  5. Planting 5,000 native plants of the target moor.

This project contains 4 strategies:

  1. CONSERVATION: *Construction of 10 botanical gardens with flower-shaped drinking fountains with fluorescent colors, with 20% sugar solution. *Sowing 5,000 native plants in the moor.
  2. EDUCATION: *Train 500 Arahuac Indians, in bird conservation. *Selection of 50 volunteers. *Sensitize 2,000 students of Arahuac schools, to avoid the sacrifice of our bird.
  3. MONITORING *Use of satellite telemetry to track 12 specimens. *8Km2 mapping of ecological corridors. *Register, in video camera, of feeding in installed drinking fountains (case study, peer reviewed).
  4. INFORMATIVE *Social networks and project website. *Video-documentary of the project to stimulate the conservation.

The extinction of the Blue-bearded hummingbird is imminent

This project precedes a study by the Fundesabanas Corporation (see: http://fundesabanas.org/botanical-gardens-with-drinkers-with-20-sacarose-as-a-conservation-strategy-of-the-bearded-hummingbird-oxypogon-cyanolaemus-in-colombia); 3 threats were identified:

  1. Hunting and illegal traffic: Arahuac indigenous hunt this hummingbird, to practice santeria, a magical ritual to achieve true love, decapitating this fragile bird in the process.
  2. Climate change: due to the high temperatures, our hummingbird descends prematurely from Sierra Nevada to reproduce, however, it is not yet the time of flowering and the bird dies of hunger.
  3. Habitat destruction.
