Solving human-raptor conflicts to protect the endangered Black-and-chestnut Eagle (Spizaetus isidori) in the Andean cloud forests of Peru.

The Black-and-chestnut Eagle is one of the most threatened raptors in the Neotropical region. The project will contribute to community-based management efforts and conservation of the Black-and-chestnut Eagle through promote changes in poultry managing techniques allowing to avoid predation by eagles. Specifically, the project will;

  1. Carry out dissemination of the project to raise awareness in the local communities
  2. Evaluate the human-eagle conflict caused by the eagle´s attacks on poultry, identifying red zones of conflict
  3. Testing different agroecological and deterrent techniques to avoid the attacks of eagles on poultry associated with poultry farming under controlled conditions (perimeter closure), as well as other dissuasive techniques (visual deterrents in poultry or near the pens)
  4. Prepare a manual of solutions to the human-eagle conflict so that these techniques will be replicated in other areas of its distribution.

We expect to have promising results which allow us to obtain solutions against human-raptor conflicts, reducing mortality rates from Black-and-chestnut eagles in the project area, and serving as example for other regions and species.
