Snake Patrol Suriname Education Program

Snake Patrol Suriname (SPS) is dedicated to the conservation of snakes in Suriname, a region within the Guiana Shield that is home to over 100 different snake species. These include iconic species such as the Emerald Tree Boa, the Green Anaconda, and venomous snakes like the Bushmaster and the Fer-de-Lance—the latter frequently coming into conflict with humans.

Through the Snake Patrol Education Program, SPS works to reduce snake killings and snakebites by promoting awareness and engaging local volunteers. They aim to inspire communities to actively protect the natural habitats of snakes, particularly the tropical rainforest. Local volunteers lead workshops that highlight the essential role snakes play in maintaining healthy ecosystems, balancing the food chain, and acting as natural pest control.

In addition to education, SPS conducts research on public perceptions of snakes and the treatment of snakebites, addressing a significant gap in data related to snakes and their venom in Suriname.
