Protection of conservation area (in site) of endemic species named Maleo (Macrocephalon maleo) in customary forest Kasiala, Central Sulawesi – Indonesia
The aim of the project is encouraging the establishment of local protected area, especially Maleo habitat, through customary law guaranteed by the local legal framework (regency level). Customary law instrument is the main basis for the indigenous Tau Taa Wana, so that the revitalization of customary law and customary institution will be the entry point for regulating and locating local protected area. The regional legal framework at the sub-national level, namely the Regent’s Regulation and or the Decree of the Regent of Tojo Una-Una wil serve as an umbrella regulation for legal protection of local protected area (Maleo habitat)
Maleo has most recently been assessed for The IUCN Red List ofThreatened Species in 2021. Macrocephalon maleo is listed as Critically Endangered under criteria A2cd+4cd; and it is listed on Appendix I of CITES. The planning of power plant establishment that estimated to 150 megawatt electricity supplies in Bongka River will I bring threats to any biodiversity. The Bongka River Basin has ranged of totally 3.085 km square, which is home for most Sulawesi endemic species.
This project is aiming for the protection of endemic species from being endangered through the combination of both legal framework and customary law.
