Promoting Model For Community Conservation Of Mongolian Marmot

The aim of the project is to protect the Mongolian Marmot by introducing long term community conservation agreement. We propose the following objectives:

  • ey Marmot area adjacent to the target local protected area (LPA) covering around 30,000 ha is taken under local protection
  • As of 2020 a minimum of 25% of Marmot habitat on the LPA is protected by conservation agreements with herder communities
  • Capacity of the communities in and adjacent to the LPA is developed.

Approach:

  • Participatory and inclusive
  • Community conservation areas
  • Conservation agreement
  • Carbon offset
  • Competences for protected area We have successfully piloted long term conservation agreements for Mongolian Marmot in Tumen han-Shalz LPA under UNDP project. Based on the above experience we propose to introduce conservation agreements for Marmot as a key tool address the threats to the target species. Methods:
  • Desktop review
  • Line transects and observation
  • Questionnaire
  • Consultation meeting
  • GIS
  • InVEST model
  • SolVES model
  • Zonation model Activities
  • Participatory assessment
  • Expansion the target LPA
  • Conservation agreements for Marmot
  • Conservation training

25% of marmot habitat protected

From the final report: “The project has achieved its objectives to introduce conservation agreement, expand the local protected area and develop capacity of communities:

  • We have achieved target to protect a minimum of 25% of Marmot habitat on the LPA is protected by conservation agreement. The total amount of the marmot distribution is 14,037 ha. Of which the marmot habitat under conservation agreement covers 10,063.8 ha or 71.6% of total marmot distribution.
  • The local parliament of Tsetserleg soum has expanded Hongorjyn tal LPA from 41,678 ha to 77,902.36 ha. The amount of the expansion is 35,924.36 ha.
  • Total of 300 people including herders and local government officials have received training.
  • Compared to the area with 354.23 km2, where marmots used to live more than 30 years ago, the distribution decreased 2.4 times.
  • Compared to 1990 (17,712 marmots) the population decreased by 2.9 times. Recommendations:
  • Develop Management Plan for Hongorjyn tal LPA
  • Define an adequate financing mechanisms to sustainably manage the LPA
  • Implement measures to reintroduce Mongolian marmot.”
