Pilot Program for the Conservation of the Recently Rediscovered, Critically Endangered Ridgway’s Hawk in Haiti
The Critically Endangered Ridgway’s Hawk is endemic to Hispaniola. Believed to have been extirpated from Haiti, it was recently rediscovered on Les Cayemites by a Haitian biologist who had received training from us in Dominican Republic in 2007.
The rediscovery of this species in Haiti is a huge milestone for the protection of this species, and for conservation in general in Haiti. Through the hiring and training of local biologists, disseminating environmental education materials, training, and activities for local community members and teachers, and active nest searching and management our immediate goal is to protect the remaining population of Ridgway’s Hawks in Haiti. At the same time, our aim is to provide the tools, training, and equipment the local team will need to continue safeguarding the Ridgway’s Hawk population far into the future.
