Participative community conservation of lemurs inside the fragmented forest corridor of Ambongamarina, Anjozorobe district

The main aim of the project is to involve community for the protection of lemurs inside their habitat and install a sustainable locally forest management. Our specific objectives are:

  • Instill a sense of pride, ownership and empathy on the species among the community by aware them on its importance as seed disperser, only found in Madagascar…
  • Introduce them in participative and practical conservation of lemurs through different semi-scientific method for long term monitoring.
  • Engaging community on fire management and control because fire is the major threats and pressure of their habitat and the whole biodiversity.

Elaborate an outreach program: we organize environmental education with school and community through video projection, brainstorming and factsheet. We organize a Lemurs day event with the GERP association.

Install local committee gathering community members, relevant stakeholder and local authority: we select and form community leaders in order to advocate lemurs and engage youth as volunteer, train and equip them on basic ecological survey of the species.

Establish fire management strategy: organize sensitization relating to environmental law and land right, creating firebreak surrounding risky area (eg: in the boundary of agricultural sites…) and watchtowers for avoiding the expansion of fire.

Lemurs in Madagascar

Madagascar is famous for its amazing landscape and biodiversity especially lemurs. Unfortunately, they are subject to extinction due to different pressure and threats especially habitat destruction and hunting. The fauna and flora of the corridor of Ambongamarina forest, Anjozorobe, do not escape to this situation. Since 2017, with the support of some donors, EDENa NGO started to protect this forest which is home of two critically endangered lemurs’ species Indri indri and Propithecus d diadema.
