Managing the trade-off between fishing activities and sea turtles conservation in Northeast Brazil
Our main goal is to strengthen the community participation in sea turtles conservation in Jacumã Beach (Paraiba, Brazil), helping locals to be the protagonist in a sustainable fishery. Fishing activities are between the most threats for marine animals, and the mitigation of their risks improve the survival of individuals. We intend to (1) reduce the impacts of incidental capture of sea turtles in fisheries (bycatch), (2) engage local members in community-based monitoring, and (3) promote public communication, education, and awareness.
- We will record in surveys the accidental captures through daily monitoring, and promote training for fishermen about how to release the animals from fishing gears with minimal injury. The main bycatch hotspots will be identified and mapped, according to area and fishery.
- To engage the community and stimulate sustainable fishery, we will hire 3 fishermen as responsible for daily in-situ monitoring. They also will conduct a monthly replacement from illegal to legal fishing gears used by local members, and ones damaged by turtles.
- To promote awareness and education, we will develop 4 workshops at the fishing village.
