Local fishers engaged for sea turtles conservation in Mono Biosphere Reserve : site of Bouche du Roy (BENIN).

The project aims to reduce threats on nesting beaches of Mono Biosphere Reserve to increase the probability that hatchlings become adults and simultaneously decreasing sources of in-water mortality.

The project will contribute to the stabilization of sea turtles populations. Then it is expected to enhance in-water survivorship of adult females and increase the number of hatchlings release per year by the hatcheries. To achieve this result, three activities will be implemented:

  1. Social marketing campaign inside fishing community: It will consist to promote the best attitudes that community could adopt to reduce threats on nesting beach and decrease incidental capture in fishing gear.
  2. Improve the skills and equipment of 20 ecoguards on the management of three turtle’s hatcheries.
  3. Organize 100 surveillance patrols during sea turtle spawning season

Reducing sea turtle’s species decline inside Mono Biosphere Reserve

This project is led by an NGO, Benin Ecotourism Concern in Benin. It aims to reduce four sea turtle’s species (Hawksbill, Leatherback, Green and Olive Ridley) populations decline inside Mono Biosphere Reserve: site of Bouche du Roy due to incidental capture in fishing gear within small-scale fisheries, nesting productivity reduction caused by poaching and predation, as well as coastal development.
