From local to species-wide: scaling-up three decades of Yellow-shouldered Parrot conservation

Overall goal: Improve the conservation status of the Yellow-shouldered Parrot.

Objective 1: Develop the first Conservation Action Plan for the Yellow-shouldered Parrot, following IUCN standards and addressing its entire distribution (Venezuela and Bonaire).

Objective 2: Increase the number of parrots fledged from protected nests by at least 30% (from current average of 55 per year).

Development of the species Conservation Action Plan will follow the One Plan Approach established by the IUCN SSC Conservation Planning Specialist Group. This method relies on the celebration of an interactive, participatory, conservation planning workshop that gathers multiple key stakeholders for the species to jointly establish conservation strategies, steps and stakeholder responsibilities which are later laid-out in the plan publication. The parrot population increase in Macanao comprises research and management activities with the engagement of Ecoguardians from the local communities to restore, monitor and survey nests (including artificial nests), translocate chicks from high-risk areas, carry the population census, among others.

Recovering the parrot population of Macanao Peninsula

Provita works to recover the parrot population of Macanao Peninsula in Venezuela since 1989, leading to an increase from 700 to 1,600 birds. Other conservation organizations carry out efforts for the Bonaire parrot population. Several populations at other Caribbean islands and mainland Venezuela are now extinct, while existing conservation efforts have remained isolated, without a perspective on the sustainability of the species.

With this project we will promote articulation and jointly develop the first Conservation Action Plan for the species as a whole, following IUCN standards. In parallel, we will continue to implement and improve the population management in Macanao.
