Engaging local community in conservation of endangered javan gibbon in Gunung Halimun Salak national park, Indonesia
As the most densely populated island on earth, only 10% of the original rainforests remain in Java Island, Indonesia, and in Gunung Halimun Salak National Park, a protected area in West Java lies one of the last harbors to the significant populations of Javan gibbons (Hylobates moloch) – the small apes that are almost forgotten.
By collaborating with our local partner, Yayasan Konservasi Ekosistem Alam Nusantara (KIARA), we aim to take a part in the conservation effort of this endangered species by developing a collaboration with the authority and the local community through
- research and monitoring,
- capacity building
- and education activity.
It will contribute to the development of an action plan for Indonesian gibbons’ species and the species management plan, while the local community who live alongside the endangered species could gain a better understanding of conservation and gain more value by protecting the resources for the generation to come.
