Conservation of the Critically Endangered Araripe Manakin in Brazil through habitat protection, restoration and capacity building

The aim of this project is to restore and safeguard key nesting habitat for the Araripe Manakin, a Critically Endangered bird, while promoting stakeholder involvement and capacity building. For the past 15 years, the team has been conducting a successful long-term conservation project, using the Araripe Manakin as a flagship species to promote habitat conservation, benefitting humans and endangered species. Besides conducting activities proposed in the National Action Plan for the conservation of the Araripe Manakin, we want to share these experiences with local stakeholders through conservation courses aiming at involving local communities and developing awareness multipliers.

Activity 1: promote training courses for local stakeholders and multipliers (public school students and teachers, local university, community leaders) to raise awareness and build capacity about the importance of the standing forest for water and biodiversity conservation and for human quality of life. Courses will take place in Aquasis forest reserve, with an auditorium and lodgings for the participants. Activity 2: according to the priorities identified in the National Action Plan for the Araripe Manakin, the team will conduct forest restoration activities in nesting areas and participate in two key environmental forums related to local protected areas and habitat conservation.

Promoting direct habitat recovery

The Araripe Manakin – with only about 215 pairs surviving in an isolated forest patch of 28 km2 in the Araripe Plateau, Brazil – is Critically Endangered due to deforestation caused by human encroachment. The Araripe Manakin National Action Plan identifies habitat protection, restoration and stakeholder involvement as the top priorities. Thus, this project expects to promote direct habitat recovery through reforestation, habitat protection by providing subsidies for the management of protected areas, and serving as a catalyst for stakeholder involvement by developing local multipliers to raise awareness and share knowledge about the wise use of water and forest resources.
