Community Led Regeneration of Himalayan Oak Forest in India

Our target is to develop institutional resources for long term conservation of three different species of oak found in Western Himalaya. These are Quercus leucotrichophora, Quercus floribunda and Quercus semecarpifolia. Himalayan Oak forest is the backbone of subsistence economy in Western Himalayan region. It provides fuel, fodder, timber and some minor forest products such as herbs to the local people. Moreover, these forests are highly valuable to sustain Himalayan Biodiversity hotspots. Many wild animals and birds are dependent on these forests. These forests are also crucial for ground water recharge and preventing soil erosion in Himalayan slopes.

The degradation of oak forests due to over exploitation in the vicinity of forest depending villages and climate change is a serious cause of concern. Various studies have found that the degradation of these forests have adverse impact on local ecological services, wildlife, birds, ground water recharge and soil erosion. Further it has direct link to the retreating of Himalayan glaciers.

Using the Integrated Landscape Approach (ILA) the project is planned to address ecological, social and economic challenges arises due to degradation of oak forest in the region. The project will work on four major activities:

  1. Community mobilization and awareness on the issue,
  2. Ex-situ conservation to promote In-situ Conservation of Oak forests,
  3. Capacity Development of Institutions already created for conservations and forest management.
  4. Supporting these institutions to develop and execute their conservation and forest management plan.

Expected results of the project are as follows:

  1. Capacity development of community and their institutions.
  2. Development of oak plant nursery
  3. Plantation of oak trees
  4. Development of management plan of community oak forest
  5. Developing biodiversity register
