Community-based conservation of Chinese pangolin in Gaurishankar Conservation Area, Nepal
The main aim of the project is to protect critically endangered Chinese pangolin by establishing a community-based monitoring mechanism by engaging the local community. The specific objectives of the project are:
- To estimate the distribution, abundance, and habitat status of pangolins through various surveys (Camera traps, transect and signs surveys, & occupancy),
- To conduct awareness programs to sensitize the local communities, and
- Develop long term monitoring & conservation mechanism through Pangolin Conservation Committee (PCC) formation and training.
The project activities are mainly focused on raising awareness among the local communities through various means-for example, training and awareness programs through FM radio and directly involving them in the survey. These activities will not only relate to pangolin conservation but indirectly will also deliver a clear message on the importance of nature and biodiversity conservation.
The project targeted awareness classes in 25 schools (approximately 800 school children) which can also deliver messages to their parents about the importance and benefits of pangolin conservation. The PCC that will be formed during the project period will be active even after the completion of the project.
The PCC will be a legal institution. The project will help strengthen the capacity of PCC members in pangolin conservation through training and engaging them in community awareness activities. PCC members will act as a change agent, and it is envisioned that these members not only give continuity to the regular monitoring of the pangolin but also engage themselves with local communities in pangolin conservation awareness.
The project will lay a foundation for long-term research and community awareness and outreach activities on critically endangered pangolin in the region. Its value and conservation importance will be disseminated among the various stakeholders. A system of monitoring by the community will be in place.
